Level 3 Inspection & Testing (PAT) Qualification
The Level 3 Award in the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment, commonly known as a PAT Qualification, teaches individuals how to safely and competently inspect and test portable electrical appliances. This course provides the knowledge needed to ensure electrical equipment is safe for use and meets legal requirements.

Course Aims
The skills and knowledge required to carry out the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. This Award has one unit which covers: statutory and non-statutory requirements, electrical units, equipment construction; inspection and testing theory, practical inspection and testing of equipment, and completion of documentation.
How long is the course?
2 days
How will it be assessed?
An on-screen exam and a practical assessment. The qualification is not graded and the learner may only achieve a pass. The qualification assessments are open book, and the learner will require the current IET Code of Practice.

The qualification relates to various electrotechnical qualifications including:
- EAL qualifications in access to building services engineering
- EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment)
- EAL electrical apprenticeship qualifications
- EAL qualifications in environmental technology systems
- EAL Level 3 Award in the Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations
- EAL Level 3 Award in the Periodic Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations
- EAL Level 3 Award in Electrical Installation Inspection, Testing, Certification, and Reporting
- EAL Level 3 Award in the Design, Installation and Commissioning of Electrical Energy Storage Systems
- EAL Level 3 Award in the Installation of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems
- EAL Level 3 Award in the Requirements for the Installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Points.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
However, learners must have the potential to achieve all aspects of the qualification.
Learners should be able to demonstrate that they have the minimum levels of literacy and numeracy required for the completion of the learning outcomes and the assessments.
Learners should be over 16 years old.
